The words fly fishing tackle and fly fishing gear can make any fly fisherman long for a day of fishing. These words describe the equipment needed for one of fishing's fun activities: fly fishing. But there's more to fly fishing tackle than just the basic rod and reel.
To add to your fly fishing tackle you're going to need bait. Most anglers carry different types of flies. These flies act like real flies in the way they look and act. This way the fish are attracted to the flies that appeal to them and you get to catch or at least attract the fish you want.
In your fly fishing tackle you're going to want lines of differing weights and types. With the variety you can change your line if there are larger fish available.
If you're sitting in a boat or on the shore, you may not want a set of waders. But for the rest of the time waders can keep you dry and comfortable while fishing. Some people use knee high waders but most of us who like fly fishing prefer chest high waders. That's because chest high waders keep you dry in most streams and ponds.
To top off your waders you're either going to have a fishing vest or a specialized backpack with pockets to hold the rest of your gear. I prefer the vest to the backpack. It's just easier for me to reach lines, flies and other things out of a vest pocket. Word to the wise, make sure the pockets either Velcro or zip closed. You don't want your fly fishing gear dumping out of the pockets.
Long needle nose pliers or special fish pliers are essential if you're going to any of the fly fishing locations that are catch and release. Catch and release means once you catch the fish, you let it go. This way the fish population continues. Pliers can easily remove the hook from the fish's mouth without harming the fish.
Catch and release means you can't show off your catch. That is unless you pack a waterproof camera to document your catch. Then you can brag to your heart's content and have the pictures to prove it.
The possible gizmos, gadgets and accessories you can find for fly fishing are limited only by your imagination and your wallet. Now I'm always looking for ones to help me fish better. So these ones I mentioned are the basics for fly fishing tackle. And I won't take responsibility for any others you choose. But if you find some good ones let me know.
